Ryanne's Movie Guide

Since Valentine's Day is nearing... And I am a big movie buff... Here is a list of movies that I would like to recommend you all the watch, with friends, family, or the significant other...

1. Just Like Heaven
My all time favourite!! Starring Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo, this movie tells the story of the spirit of Elizabeth Masters finding her love when she is coma... The great connection between the characters is the whole thing that holds the movie together...

2. The Legend of the Falls
This is a very long winded epic but I cried in the end of it. It was a beautiful story about the romance of a girl with three brother. Starring Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Aidan Quinn and Julia Ormond, this love story has a think and colourful plot. Not to mention the splendid scenic view that captures the heart.

3. Meet Joe Black
Another classic starring Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins. This is a story of the God of Death meeting a girl that he loves when he was on a mission to spend a few days with a man whose life he is going to take away. A few lessons in life can be learnt. But the most captivating part of the movie is the romance between the 2 leads and also the wonderful soundtrack written by James Horner.

4. Shakespeares In Love
This is a great romance story of famous writer and playwright, William Shakespeares. Starring Joseph Fiennes, Gwyneth Paltrow and Geoffrey Rush, this movie tells the story of William Shakespeares falling in love with an aristocrat lady who camouflaged as a young man to play in a drama. But their love was forbidden, as the young lady is about to marry. The pain and passion of a forbidden love, just like Romeo and Juliet, is really the main emotion of the entire movie. This movie also starred heavy weight like Dame Judi Dench as Queen Elizabeth.

5. Moulin Rouge
Another all-time favourite, starring Nicole Kidman and Ewen McGregor. This is a story similar to Shakespeares In Love but with more colourful scenes, sexier outfit and better musical. The ending is sad, and very very memorable. The passion of forbidden love, the pain of knowing you can't own a person... The 2 actors played it out perfectly. I love this very very much.

6. Love Actually
This is a combination of multiple short stories, connected to each other in small ways, and formed a movie. Almost like making patchwork blanket. A few wonderful romance, depicts the whole cycle of love. The puppy love, the forbidden love (again), the newly-wed love, the old couple love, the foreign love... It is also a star-studded movie, with big names of the likes of Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley, Alan Rickman, Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, and many many more.

7. Bridget Jones' Diary 1, 2 and 3
This is a funny story of Bridget Jones, a fat middle-aged smoker who was desperate for love and met 2 irresistable guys on the way, playboy (Hugh Grant) and a lawyer (Colin Firth). Wonderful storyline, great moments, but nonetheless, it is a reminder that no matter how old you are, or how much you weigh, a person who truly loves you won't mind that.

8. A Walk To Remember
Starring Mandy Moore and Shane West, this is a story of a leakemia patient (Many Moore) and a bad-boy-turned-good-boy (Shane West). The romance of it is how faithful Shane West was, knowing well that Mandy Moore is going to die soon. He even committed to marrying her, just months before she died. Wonderful love story, showing us how much love can change a person. Well, a person who don't change for love, is not in love.

9. Pearl Harbor
The historical moment in US wartime history, the movie tells a fictional story of 2 soldiers in love with the same nurse. Starring Ben Affleck, Josh Harnett, and Kate Beckinsale, the movie focus a lot on US soldier's past-time. However, the parts that I really love are the scenes between Josh Harnett and Kate Beckinsale. Also the airplane fights are wonderful. But the ending was sad. So sad that I cried. Again, James Horner wrote the scores for the soundtrack. I love the expression of the whole movie, very emotional and true.

10. Titanic
Last but not least, how can I ever forget Titanic? This is me and my brother's favourite romance movie of all times. Starring Leornado DiCarpio and Kate Winslet, this story tells the fictional love story of Jack Dawson and Rose Black on the "unsinkable" Titanic. The great moments shared between the 2 leads, the iconic image on the hull of the ship where Jack held Rose in the wind, the love-making scenes in the carriage, the last words that Jack said to Rose... And another wonderful attraction of the movie is also the soundtrack written by James Horner. The soundtrack simply enhance the expression of the whole movie.

~~This is purely my list of favourite romance movies. Of course, there are the classical Gone With The Wind, Roman Holiday, English Patient, Breakfast At Tiffanny's, and many many more. But in my humble opinion, what makes a romance movie great is not only the on-screen chemistry of the leads, but also the emotion of the plot, the arrangement of scenes and of course, the scores of the soundtrack. Notice, most of the movies listed above have scores written by James Horner. That guy is good!!

Last but not least,

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY
