The Hurt Locker - A Review

After many recommendations from friends and online reviews, I finally watched this movie.
It was not bad at all. In fact it is interesting.

The stories centered around three American soldiers who specialised in bomb technicians stationed in Iraq. The movie opened with the death of a bomb technician and the main character, Sgt. William James (Jeremy Renner) stepping into the three-man team consisting Sgt Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) and Spc. Owen Elridge (Brian Geraghty). Renner was one reckless bomb technician who risked his team members' lives in many ways. The whole movie doesn't have a plot but it told a story of bomb technicians in Iraq. The movie ended with Renner suiting up for yet another bomb.

I like the movie because the filming angle was realistic. Director Kathryn Bigelow employed various filming vantage points that depicted a realistic angle and gave the audiences are blow by blow incident recount. The story telling was cleverly arranged too. Though there weren't really a story with the typical villian for the heroes to chase after, there weren't a moment of peace throughout the 2 hours plus. Audiences were kept at the edge of their seats, wondering what might happened. And the heroes weren't invincible too. All the time, I feared for the heroes, not knowing if they will survive disarming this next bomb or not.

Another thing that is fantastic about this movie is the cast. The movie is made up if virtually unknown actors who were, in my humble opinion, good in playing their respective roles. Jeremy Renner's display of his stoned-face almost throughout the movie but I feel that his eyes said all the pain he felt as a soldier. It wouldn't be half as good as it is if the casts are famous actors like Jamie Foxx or Jennifer Garner. However, there were some star appearances by Guy Pearce, Ralph Fiennes, David Morse and Evangeline Lily.

By the way, this movie bagged some nominations from the Oscars. I think this one is unlikely to win anything because its competitors with the likes of Avatar, Precious and many more is just too strong. Nonetheless, this movie is worth watching.

Ratings : 7/10. A good movie that tells a realistic story, not one full of adventure or impossible to perform stunts.

ccy, thanks for the support!

nicholas, D9 is one of the best sci fi movie of all time. Just, too much gore for me... Hurt Locker is no bad, but somehow I keep on comparing this with The Kingdom a few years back, which was not really a good one.
