Glee - A Review

I first thought that Glee is just another High School Musical where people randomly sing and dance out of no where and everything is so perfect that a square suddenly feels like a circle.

I was wrong about it. Glee is NOTHING like HSM. It is a musical, but better and stronger.

Glee is basically about a school teacher Will Shuester trying to restore the Glee Club, something like a music choir club, back to its former glory but recruiting social outcasts in school. There is this arrogant but talented Rachel Berry who thinks she really is a star, a dumb jock Finn Hudson, a obese black girl who wants to sing solo Mercedes, a gay but very talented and fashionable Kurt, a fake-stutter gothic asian Tina Cohen- Chang, a paraplegic guitarist Artie, a playboy football jock Puck, former cheerleader queen bee who later became pregnant Quinn Fabray, two very dumb blonde cheerleaders Brittany and Santana and a bunch of people I can't really remember. There is also interesting side stories with the Shuester-Mrs Shuester-School Councellor Emma- Football coach Ken romance foursome, cheerleading coach Sue who tries to bring Glee down and Sue-Principal Higgins blackmailing, etc.

What I like most about this series is that it does not deal with Disney's perfect little world but acknowledge deeper issues about self-esteem, homosexuality, peer pressure, teen pregnancy and all sorts of things. Being a musical, it really broke the HSM-dominated scene with fantastic covers and renditions of classic oldies, modern pop songs, brilliant mash-ups and all. And the singing only happens in a rehearsal, on stage, in a fantasy, etc. It is not HSM-Bollywood style, which makes no sense at all.

Though I never like Rachel Berry at all, but I love her voice, especially when she duets with Idina Mendez who played Rachel Berry's birth mother. They did a superb rendition of Poker Face and I Dreamed A Dream. There were also numerous guest appearances by famous recording artists and Broadway stars the likes of Josh Groban, Idina Mendez, Kirstin Chenoweth, Eve, Neil Patrick and so much more. It is almost addictive to watch!

I don't really have a favourite character in this series because the leads are not exactly likable. Rachel Berry is annoying 90% of the times, Finn is really dumb for a guy. But I do enjoy Kurt, especially when he sings. I LOVE HIS SHOW TUNES!!

However, I think I love Brittany the most. She has very very little screen time and she is a minor character so small that basically she is insignificant. But, she made use of her little screen time and blurt out lines so dumb that I like her!

Ratings : 8/10. Definitely better than HSM!
